In regards to those Target specials that give a free gift card with your purchase?
yhing8 asked:
Can the gift card be used for that current transaction? Target is having a sale for a digital camera and they are giving a free $20 gift card with the purchase.

They will not allow the gift card to be used on that transaction, BUT you can buy the camera, return it, and buy it back with the gift card. (No, you will not get a second gift card when you buy it back).

no, but if you’re buying anything else you can split your purchase into two transactions, and use the card to pay for the 2nd.

Things may have changed, but what the former GSTL said was wrong.
When you purchase the camera, it will prompt the cashier to scan the giftcard. Technically, no money is on the card until the transaction is completed, so you can not use it to pay for the camera. As the other person stated, if you are buying more stuff, you can do two separate transactions and use the card right away. However, if you return the camera, it will subtract the amount of the gift card from the amount they give you back.
For example, let’s say the camera costs $150, plus you get the gift card. If you return the camera, they will only give you $130, and you will still have paid $20 for the giftcard. If you were to then turn around a buy the camera using the giftcard, you will be charged another $150. You can then use the giftcard to pay part of it, but you’ll still have to pay $130 out of pocket, and you’ll be back where you started.
